I want to preface this review by, again, reiterating that I do not read nonfiction so I am not sure if this is specific to this memoir or applies to the genre in general.
This is my first memoir. I typically do not read nonfiction because I live in nonfiction so what’s the point, is what I figure. However, I grabbed The Woman in Me by Britney Spears the second it came out because I wanted to know more. I wanted to see what she went through. I mean, it’s Britney!
Well, despite it being Britney, I was not sold on memoirs or nonfiction. The writing felt very middle school. I did this. I went here. This happened to me. I felt this. Just, no tact or flow. Very tumblr venting kind of feel. Writing aside, the insight we get into Britney’s life and all she has been through was very sad. From early childhood and having to work and being told what to do and how to support her family, to the conservatorship and everything in between. It’s only snippets and glances. One sentence to capture everything, but honestly? One sentence is enough. Britney has given enough access to herself and her life.
A very short review and it feels weird to write considering it is a memoir, but The Woman in Me by Britney Spears is a quick, if melancholic read. Pick it up if you’re a fan of hers, borrow it from the library if you just want the gossip, skip if neither intrigues you.
