Devils Kill Devils by Johnny Compton was one of the horror books I was most looking forward to this year. I thought this would be spooky, heavy, horrorful. Instead, I was left disappointed and bored. I wonder if this might just be because publishers and book vendors tend to lump everything as a horror, especially as we get closer to Halloween because this didn’t feel like a horror. This felt more like a paranormal gothic thriller. Or maybe horror light.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood

After really falling for The Love Hypothesis, I saw Bride by Ali Hazelwood and thought this was an absolute must read for me. I picked it up not knowing a single thing other than vampire, werewolf, Ali Hazelwood. It did not disappoint! This is a pure, paranormal romance and if you’re expecting something more, something greater, you’re in the wrong genre. The story was fun, the characters great, and the romance smutty.

Winter Bloodlust by Miranda Thorn

Stumbled upon Winter Bloodlust by Miranda Thorn, a short winter billionaire romance that ticked all my boxes. While entertaining, its short length left me wanting more. The Bloodstone Institute’s world intrigued me, and the characters, Holly and Nick, had a captivating dynamic. Despite the tease, I craved a fuller story. Exciting and promising, but the anticipation for Secret Bloodlust’s release might be worth it.

Bloody Broken Fate by Hazel Jonas

Desperately needing a break from holiday romance, I dove into Bloody Broken Fate by Hazel Jonas—a dark vampire romance. Initial skepticism aside, the book hooked me fast. Raquel and Zeno’s patient and refreshing dynamic sets it apart from typical dark romances. The worldbuilding, with vampire mafiosos, witches, and Greek gods, captivated me. While some technical issues existed, it didn’t detract from the engaging plot. A must-read for dark paranormal fans!

Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Would I recommend this? Honestly, I think I would simply because 75% of the book was really good and really captivated my attention. There are good ideas and it was good foundation, even if Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness stumbled at the end.
