Absolutely obsessed with Obsessively Yours by Jamie Applegate Hunter! I wasn’t sure how much I would love this after Viciously Yours (I am a SUCKER for epistolary romances,) but this topped Viciously easily. The relationship between Violet and Roman was so tender and amazing and, most importantly, complete.
Watching Violet and Roman’s relationship bloom from friendship to romance was so sweet and necessary. I feel like with so many other romances, we miss those building blocks that are needed to make that connection feel deeper, to make us invested. We definitely get that here. I loved watching how they grew up as friends, then realizing they were in love with one another. It made watching the devastation of Roman being fated to Violet’s twin all the more heartbreaking. Their romance is built slowly and completely. We can see exactly why they love each other, what the other brings to the relationship. They absolutely are equals. I love that so much more than simple instalove where we’re just told they’re in love and never see the how or the why.
Pacing was good! Every scene felt like it had a purpose. Everything moved smoothly and we’re able to go through the ten yearsish at a good pace where we pick up the important milestones in each of their lives without bogging the story down with needless details. Character development was great. Roman was steadfast in his love for Violet and was ready to sacrifice everything if it meant having her by his side. Not a single other woman existed in his eyes. He was perfection. The horse scene with the foot caught in the stirrup? That should be baseline. It was the best. Meanwhile Violet was a great FMC. I loved that she didn’t spend her life pining over someone she believed was taken. She moved on – and for the most part, Roman let her while he figured out how to make them work.
Something I think folks need to be aware of before going into Obsessively Yours by Jamie Applegate Hunter, is that this is a character driven romance. What does that mean? The plot is their relationship. That is the driving force of this narrative. The conflict? They are in love but aren’t mates. That is what the plot works to figure out. This is a romance first and foremost, but with fantasy flavor. This is a romance and there just so happens to be magic and fae. I think the best way to think of this for folks that are used to romantasy having some overarching world plot with a side of romance is this is a romance that would be read in a fantasy world. I absolutely recommend this and think if you enjoyed Viciously Yours, you’ll enjoy this! If you love friends to lovers and forbidden romance, this is perfect!
