A legacy built on a lie.

Sophia is a bored and lonely princess, more content to live out her days locked away in her chambers than facing the increasingly grotesque suitors her father forces on her. With her younger brother destined for the throne, there isn’t much value to her but in a marriage alliance. And so, she is destined to live out her days as the trophy wife of some fat merchant or lecherous lord, occasionally bearing children to bolster the ranks of the wealthy and powerful.

But trouble is brewing in the crumbling streets of Calos. While the future king sits pretty on his throne and dines on fancy foods, there are whispers of rebellion among the poor and downtrodden people. At the same time a dragon has taken up residence in Calos Valley—the first in fifty years.

With no valiant hero like her famous grandfather, Saint George the dragon slayer, Sophia’s father turns to the old way to ward off the beast—a maiden sacrifice. What better choice than the daughter that threatens her brother’s reign?

Sophia is no trembling damsel, however, and the dragon is not at all who—or what—he appears to be.

review

When I found Blood Feud by Moira Kane, I had been in search of a very specific type of book. Namely, a dragon romance thanks to a run little fanfic I read and fell in love with. All I wanted was a dragon shifter who finds and romances a mate, and that’s exactly what I got! This was sexy, had light plot, and a satisfying romance.

Unlike a lot of other straightforward romances, Blood Feud featured enough of a plot and worldbuilding to get me excited about this world. There is the human kingdom of Calos that is struggling with poverty, starvation. Their King can’t do much. The eldest child, Princess Sophia, is passed over as heir in favor of her younger brother who can’t string words together without revealing himself an idiot. As times get dire, Sophia is given up to a dragon as their sacrifice. And boy does the dragon come and snatch her right up, realizing she is his chosen mate.

The worldbuilding unravels as the romance comes to fruition. For anyone that doesn’t like instalove, this is definitely not for you (honestly, why are you even thinking of picking up a Fated Mates if you don’t like instalove? That’s like the number one reason for the instalove trope tbh.) MMC Burne doesn’t understand why his dragon has chosen Sophia as his mate but decides to give it three days for them to fall in love and decide to commit to the whole mates business. They fight and struggle to understand one another. As they do, we learn what has happened to dragons, why Sophia’s family is so unfit to rule, and why Burne’s dragon has chosen Sophia as his mate. And then, just as the third day is up, they fall in love.

Of course once they fall in love misfortune strikes. It’s momentarily tumultuous. There’s slight tension on what will happen, what path will Sophia and Burne choose. And then everything is resolved and we get our happily ever after.

Is Blood Feud by Moira Kane a perfect book? No. Is it a dragon shifter romance you can finish in one sitting? Absolutely. If you want to read something that is not that deep, that passes the time, or is niche enough that you’re looking for dragon romance, you’ll enjoy this. If you can’t suspend disbelief, or think kidnapping turns this into an immoral dark romance, don’t bother and go read something in the sweet/funny contemporary romance aisle instead.
