Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn't afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn't so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy... not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.
As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people--like Alex, who's been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team's effort to clean up his image. What she doesn't expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn't one to cross professional boundaries--and besides, Alex doesn't do relationships... or does he? The more she sees behind Alex's bad-boy facade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

review

I went deep looking for some hockey romances to read and came across, not Alex by Sawyer Bennett, but another book by the same author set in the same universe but on a different team. Then I saw that she had MULTIPLE series set in the same world, all hockey romances, different teams. I had never been more excited. I decided I needed to start at the beginning and hoped I wouldn’t be disappointed. I’m happy to report, I was not!

First released about ten years ago, there are definitely some parts that feel tired. But, this makes sense to me considering how much hockey romance has been published afterward. Despite this, the premise and problems felt original. Typical grumpy face Alex actually has a reason to be grumpy, to hate everything despite being a rich, star hockey player. Seeing him and Sutton bond over their issues was refreshing and something I feel like we miss in so many other hockey romances. These characters were people with pasts and their relationship was built on more than just lust.

Alex by Sawyer Bennett was a good hockey romance read and a good intro to a new world and series. I’m looking forward to see how Bennett’s writing style evolves and how the stories progress considering how long this world of her has been going on.
