I got into Halloween books too late this year, but just in time to pick up The Marriage Hex by Sarah Blue. I’ve had my eye on this cute little spooky romance since it was announced and I was finally able to pick it up! It was a cute and sweet read that definitely has me excited for the next in this new series.
Coming in at 300ish pages, this was such a quick short read. Honestly, the perfect length for the story we were given. Pacing was quick, but not rushed. Worldbuilding unfurled naturally. The romance rotted my teeth. Violet was raised in an orphanage alongside Silas, the boy that became her best friend and her first love. They accidentally agree to marry each other when they turn 30, and practically confess their feelings for each other right then on the spot at 16 years old. Unfortunately, life tears them apart. They reconnect at 30 and despite both still in love with one another, the lives they’ve been forced to live have them terrified of being rejected. And so, they yearn and pine. The angst that we traditionally get with so many romance novels doesn’t really seem to exist here. Yes, there’s the pining, but it becomes very clear very quickly that they do have feelings for one another and decide to act upon it. There is conflict outside of the romance, just to be clear, but it comes from outside forces.
Something that was really unique that I loved, were the wolves! Silas’ werewolf fursona, Thorin, has his own POV and his own chapters. It was really lovely to read because so many other omegaverse/werewolf romances just have the man turn completely animalistic, going caveman possessive. While that’s fun sometimes, it was nice to see that Silas as a man loves Violet for who she is whereas Thorin wants to claim. The spice here was, again, more sweet than spicy. It is omegaverse, so course be prepared for some knotty times but, the spice doesn’t overtake the romance, and again, it felt so tender and genuine between the two.
Would I recommend The Marriage Hex by Sarah Blue? Yeah, I think I would if you’re looking for a cute and quick paranormal romance. It isn’t going to revolutionize the genre, but it is going to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. If you liked Bride, and want more like that, you’ll love this!
